Fuels and raw materials

Concrete is the second-most used resource on the planet after water. There is currently no practical substitute that matches its versatility and durability. Cement, the key ingredient of concrete, is manufactured in an energy- and resource-intensive process.

Maximising the eco-efficiency of cement production, producing more cement while using fewer resources and producing less waste and pollution per tonne, is core to Cement Australia’s business. As part of Cement Australia’s commitment to environmental performance, we focus on increasing the eco-efficiency of cement production through:

  • Production process - using modern production techniques that reduce total thermal energy consumed per tonne of clinker produced
  •  Alternative fuels and raw materials - substituting non-renewable fossil fuels with alternative fuels; and using industrial by-products as a replacement for some raw materials
  • Mineral components - using appropriate secondary materials such as blast furnace slag and fly ash to reduce the fuel and raw materials required per tonne of cement produced
