Cement Industry Federation

The Cement Industry Federation (CIF) is the national body representing the Australian cement industry. The CIF's mission is to help promote and sustain a competitive Australian cement industry that is responsive to the expectations and needs of the community.

The CIF is responsible for coordinating the industry’s approach to greenhouse issues, through its Cooperative agreement with the Commonwealth government under the Greenhouse Challenge program.

The CIF represents and reflects the Australian industry through its Project Partner status with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) hosted Cement Sustainability Initiative (CSI). This initiative aims to explore what sustainable development means for the cement industry, and identify and facilitate actions that cement companies can take as a group and individually in this area.

The CSI’s Agenda for Action approach was launched in Paris in July 2002, following a three year program of research and stakeholder consultation. Much has happened since the launch - the CSI now has new member companies, and six task forces have been established to oversee the main areas of action. In addition, a stakeholder dialogue in Brussels in late 2003 brought more valuable feedback and input into the CSI task force process.

The CSI believes it is well-placed to report real improvements in sustainable development initiatives by the industry, both collectively and from individual members. A progress report was released in June 2005 which detailed member-wide and individual actions. Probably the most significant element of the CSI to date has been the production of a protocol for measuring and reporting CO2 emissions from cement manufacturing, the first time an industry has adopted a voluntary and independently audited emissions protocol.

The CIF provides a range of publications including technical notes on a number of topical environmental and sustainability issues, as well as public reports on the environmental performance of the industry.
