Paving
Garden Paving is of one of the most rewarding outdoor jobs anyone can do. You’ll need some Cement Australia Gap Sand, Concrete Mix as well as a some pavers and a quantity of river sand. Beach sand is not suitable. For tools you’ll need a screed board, a rake, some string and a rubber mallet.
Step 1
Mark out the path with string then dig it out to a depth of between 8 cm and 10 cm, allowing a slope for water run-off. Then place boards along both side of the path, supporting them with wooden stakes. Make sure the tops of the boards are level, they’re your guide for levelling the sand.
Step 2
Lay a bed of slightly damp sand between the boards to a depth of about 5 cm. Rake it out on an even surface, then run your screed board along the top of the edging boards to level the sand.
Step 3
Lay the pavers in your chosen pattern, allowing up to a 3 mm gap. When you’ve laid about a square metre, start tapping them down using a flat board and rubber mallet. The board allows you to tap down a number of pavers at the same time. Now lay down another square metre or so and repeat the process until the path is finished.
Step 4
To finish off, pour Cement Australia Gap Sand directly onto the pavers and sweep it into the joints. Vibrate or tap with a rubber mallet to settle sand into joints topping up with Gap Sand where necessary. Finally, brush the pavers clean and then lightly hose the path down to consolidate the joints. Remove boards and using Cement Australia Concrete Mix and steel trowel, bed the outside brick edges in with an angled layer of mix to prevent any movement.
