Alternative fuels and raw materials

Cement Australia is able to provide a sustainable solution to the problem of industrial waste disposal by utilising by-products both as raw material replacement and as an alternative source of fuel in the cement making process.
By employing this method, Cement Australia ensures that a wide variety of by-products are destroyed without any harm to the environment. At the same time, these by-products are being used as an alternative to natural gas, coal or oil, which would otherwise fuel the cement kilns.

The extremely high temperatures and long residence times of cement kilns have the effect of destroying complex organic compounds and neutralising harmful mineral elements.
Concrete made from cement manufactured using AFR practices has the same safe construction and environmental properties as if it had been made using
traditional fossil fuels.
Cement Australia is also actively involved in the reuse of used tyres as a fuel and raw material replacement in cement kilns.
Waste tyres are becoming a major issue for landfill disposal because they are difficult to compact and over time tend to resurface. Not only do they pose a health risk through the potential for air and water pollution, the disposal of tyres via landfill contributes to long-term land contamination.
